John William Graham letters, July-August, 1943

I got here. Arrived in [illegible] about noon and after eating came right out to camp and showered and went to bed. Today I feel quite refreshed but my morale is kinda low. Ive had lots of fun telling the fellows how good that fried chicken, peach pie, burnt sugar cake etc. tasted while I was home. Makes my own mouth water to think of it. Im afraid it wasnt much of a vacation for you and cut a terrific swath in your ration [illegible] but Johnny surely enjoyed it. When I get back here we had 13 ships which had cut down my crew. Lost my Asst crew chief and three other fellows from my gang which leaves only eight of us but I think will get some more men soon at least I hope so. The plane kind of acted up while I was away had to have an engine replaced & the new one they put on was a rebuilt one and was not assembled correctly in the [illegible] section and had to be torn down and rebuilt. Guess the new Asst crew chief had his hands full for a while. Im going to the soft ball game the last of the season tonight. Our team is the league champion and undefeated if they win tonight. Must clean up and shave. Thanks again for all the good eats and a grand furlough in Iowa. Love Johnny.
