& Maud. I think as you come home it would be a good idea for you from Hannibal to go out to Topeka & see for your self, dont you? Saml. H. Elbert has been at home & is now gone to Denver City. He is the Secretary for the territory & in the absence of the Governor takes his place. Yesterday I was at Mrs Findleys. & Dr Elbert was there & as it had rained he brought me home in his buggy, & told me about Sam, & how badly Leeroy wanted to be transferred to a command in the west, But as he is a great tactician they cannot dispense with his servaces in drilling the soldiers. The 2d Iowa was in evry bodys mouth in the City & he wanted to have some of the glory. He belongs to that division of the army which is "setting" I think the turkey that spread itself setting on a hundred eggs is beat now, fore surely they make a biger spread than it did.
