May 31st 1918 Dear Mother, Well the big watched for battle is again in progress, but is yet some distance from our location. From all reports the Allies were taken by surprise, but reports are some times deceiving and but out for a good cause. Telephone reports here this evening say all points are holding and the advance has been checked. Chicago's city is in a bad place at the present. I received 10 letters, one of them from Helen Hoover. She said
