Saturday day evening Aug the 5 1860 Dear sister I take my pen in hand to let you know that I am still alive and well and I hope those few lines may find you the same. I received your letter today and was glad to hear that you was all well and that there was tolerable good crops well that is a fine thing for the people out here will have to go to Iowa to get their provisions for the drouth has kill the crops here so much that they will not be enough to do them and Missouri is in the same situation they have nothing there they have had to bring their stock over here to keep them from starvation and Kansas the same they need not be afraid of not getting a good price for their grain this season back there there is a good deal of sickness here this Summer and good many deaths they average from 8 to 10 per week there was two last night within 3 miles of where I stay and some more before long I have set up every other night for the last two weeks and I don't know how much longer one died at this place
