February 1, 1944 Pocattelo, Idaho Dear Dad + Mom: Just came from work and will write a bit before going to chow. Hear it isn't very good anyhow (mutton stew) so I won't hurry. Am using a little table to write on which I built this afternoon, wish I'd had the opportunity to build it sooner but somebody will get some good of it. Strangely enough the legs are square and it doesn't jiggle when I write. Went into town last night with some of the fellows, had a fine steak and saw a show. Got my hair cut too. I was going to get a "butch" one but my hair is too soft to stand up so the barber talked me out of it. Did get a very short one tho. The fellows took up a collection in the pay line yesterday and are going to buy our ex-engineering officer some sort of present. I am sorry we lost him as he was a fine fellow and not such a bad engineering officer either, he was a bit green maybe
