April 23, 1944 Italy Dear Dad & Mom: Must hurry and write this because it's getting dark and our lights aren't too good. We made a bunch of candles the other day out of some wax we found and it makes a pretty fair light and a find smudge. Im sure no mousquitoes will bother us in this tent. Found a ring today someone had hammered out of a half dollar, many of the boys made them when we came over on the boat. If done carefully you can still read the writing around the edge, think I'll try it myself someday if I get time. The natives pasture their sheep around our tents and runways so we wont have any grass to mow etc. Most of the traffic is two wheel carts drawn by horses or mules. It seems all the farm workers live in the towns and go out to work early in the morning and back at night loaded with produce. We had artichokes a few days ago, and Im not fond of them would about as soon eat blatters. They seem to raise lots of funny looking vegetables which have stalks and heads like cauliflower but I dont know just what they are. We had an inspection of our tents today and I dont think ours looked so hot, Im on duty
