April 27, 1944 Italy Dear Dad & Mom: Just got your letter today which you wrote the seventh , won't be long before I hear that you got my safe arrival message. I'll bet everyone is busy getting in crops. Hope the good weather holds for a couple of weeks. Expect old Plugg is busy as can be with all his extra land. I'm smudging up this paper. I notice but I'm just writing this in an odd moment and didn't have a chance to wash up. The days have been too short to write everyday but maybe soon I'll get settled down. I've seen some birds today that must inhabit the whole world, english sparrows and crows wouldn't be much loss if we didn't have them at all. There has been a little dog out in a field near where Im sitting that has about worn himself out chasing the crows every time they land out he goes, seems to think they don't belong there. Met a fellow from Grundy Center yesterday, I forgot to ask him if he knew your old friend there. Said he'd been through West Union a lot.
