In Camp, Salt. Creek, Monroe Co., Mo., July 16,'61. Dear Parents: - We arrived here yesterday by R.R. from Quincy. Of our trip from Springfield I now propose a synopsis of scenes, notable persons met, etc. We left Springfield on the 3d of the present month, with the ostensible purpose of "footing" it to Quincy, but when within fifty miles of Quincy, we received orders to "about face" and retrace about four miles to the nearest R.R. station, there to go into camp and await further orders, equipments &c. This station was Naples on Ill. river. We remained here two days when orders came to march into Missouri, and face
