[Oct. 12, 1943] Tuesday evening Dear Mother, I just got letters 1 & 2 & will try to send the blanks off again soon as possible. I wonder why they didnt just destroy the one that didnt apply. To be real honest I don't know how long I'm going to be here. Today I started the 4 weeks course in Basic Recreation, which is quite a course! It has everything in it & ought to kill or cure my stage fright. After those 4 weeks I should have one more week orientation & then I think I'd probably better go overseas as soon as I can. If I change out of that category there will be a lot of red tape to go through to go back in. Id probably have two weeks' to a month's practice even in "overseas" before leaving. What do you think? My walnut stain is all gone but a little patch on each thumb. My roommate, Josephine Clapp, is reporting back to St. Louis for assignments the end of this week & I have told her to look up Fran. I like Jo and am
