[Oct. 26, 1943] Tuesday night Dear Mother, I have received (1) the dyed shoes, which were very nice (2) the letter with Fran's note (3) the registered letter. On sober thought I've decided to send back the jacket receipt. I think it would be silly to get it here for only a couple of weeks. It has been raining steadily for a week, and if that keeps up there wouldn't be a chance to wear it. I'm sorry I put you to the trouble of sending it. It was so nice to hear that Karlie had found an accordion. I think he was very lucky to get one now. Can he stand up and play it? I have written cards to lots of people. I'll try to write Roberta a letter tonight. I had a nice letter from Betty today. [note in margin: Mrs. Eric Wilson, a neighbor] No word from Wil; I expect he hasn't arrived yet. I hope he will come when I have a free moment. I don't think I'd have time for any magazines. I try to get a paper every few days, but don't listen to the radio at all. Yes, I hope you will keep on with the letter a week, as they would be sent right out from here to wherever I was going. I'll know in a couple of weeks whether it will be a matter of weeks or of months before I go. The tetanus shot didn't affect me at all. I have the second one day after tomorrow. We are advised not to take our typhoid shots until after this Basic course, & I can see why. Why did you have to have an X-ray at Dr. Richardsons? I hope everything is all right. Poor Jo Clapp had a sore spot on her
