[Nov. 19, 1943] How is the throat? & How are the teeth? & the oil supply? Friday night Dear Mother, My pen is out of ink, and for the second day I've forgotten to fill it. I guess I didn't tell you how our work is arranged. The day is divided with 3 shifts, & we are on 2 of them each working day. Then we have a day & a half off a week. I'm going to work this weekend & Thanksgiving, & Mary Bess is going to work next weekend & Monday while I loaf. The first shift is 8:30-12:00 & consists of planning, preparing the craft carts with shells, cord, leather, stencils, etc. & putting on the requests of the bed patients. The next shift is 1-5. This involves taking care of the craft shop 1:30-4:00, or going out to 1, 2, or 3 wards with the craft cart or game cart. Some days a week the Gray Lady Volunteers go; others we go. Each ward with more than three bed patients is covered 3 times a week. So far I've been to 4 wards. I told you about the T.B. ones. Today & yesterday I went to 23 & 24, the post-operative wards. I went alone & had fine success. In 24, the one where they were supposed to be too sick to care much, I left all but 2 patients fooling around with leather or shells. Today I had
