own temperature. In my own special wards--the post operative ones--there are also some interesting characters. I'm in there almost every day so we are quite chummy by now. They say they like my smile, & threaten to put holes in my ears with the leather punch so that they can try on the earrings they are making. There's one 17 years old from Georgia that they all kid by telling him that he is a Yankee now because he has been in Mass. so long. He almost weeps sometimes & has to be reassured. Another black-eyed lad, named Maitland, had me hopping from the first day he arrived. He wanted to make everything. I left him yesterday sitting beside his bed with a model battleship, a Mickey Mouse plaque, Christmas cards, earrings, shell beads and a wallet to lace. He had already spilt white paint in his bed. His left hand is done up all but the thumb & he threads his needles by sticking the needle in his cast to hold it. All the dreariness and sick feeling that I'd associated with hospitals
