December 9, 1943
Dear Mother,
I'll start with two bits of "restricted" news--that is, for you only and not to be mentioned to anyone else. To preface, I'd like to remark that your college chums from Upper Iowa (whom I've always marveled at) turn out not to be the only ones who are interesting. 
Item 1 (restricted)
Several weeks ago I told Don, when he asked me where I wanted to go, that I'd rather go east--to Europe. Last night when I took him & his wife out to dinner, he said he had looked me up with the military & that the Red Cross & Army man said I could go where I wanted but to keep it quiet. Don said if I wanted to go to the Pacific, I could go at once, but in the other direction it would be longer & in that case I'd probably be here for Christmas. So that's my choice now, although of course if time wore on I'd be so anxious to get working that I wouldn't care where.
