Dec, 13, 1943 Monday afternoon Dear Mother, Things are really happening around here. Mary Bess reported at 8:30 this morning, expecting to clear tomorrow & maybe leave Wed. or Thursday. Instead she left at 3:30 for a port! I just finished helping her off & she was very much excited. Restricted information: She got tropic weight uniforms & is going with the first group of nurses & Red Cross to go to a certain spot. There is a group of them who will disperse as they go along & reach their spots. I really envy her in a way; it would be very exciting & fun to be on the way where you were needed so. On the other hand, the other way interests me even more. In a way I feel a little as I used to when I guessed what I was going to get for Christmas -- glad to know & yet some of the excitement was gone. I got a little package from Harriet today & will send her something from here. I hope that is [Note along the edge:] Mary Bess went to the Pacific Theater, married an Australian. Died of breast cancer after war.
