Nice letter from Blanche; I'd already written to her. Hanky from Stribleys; solid cologne compact from Roberta. [Dec. 21, 1943] Tuesday night Dear Mother, Well, I'm all alone in my nice four-bed suite tonight. I hope I get at least one new roommate before too long. You'll be amused at what happened to Katharine Hosch, the Tri-Delt from Georgia whom I've mentioned before. She came in last night and announced philisophically, "Everything happens to this lil chicken!" And I guess it does. She had been waiting for one boy friend to come for Christmas, but last night she got a telegram from another who came in on the Saratoga after being at sea a long time. Later he phoned and asked her to marry him. He has just till the day after Christmas, but that didn't seem to worry Katharine, so now she is en route by plane to San Francisco. She has a month's leave of absence and will go into domestic instead of foreign work. She remembered to phone her folks just before she left & was a little surprised that her mother was perturbed. She's a card! She asked me if I thought she was being too practical because she waited to confer with the Nat'l staff! She couldn't get reservations, of course, & train would be too late, so she just packed her bag and went to the airport and I bet she gets out there all night. Last night some of us met again for dinner.
