1944 To: Mr. Dave Elder Scuttlebutt Washington, Iowa From: PFC Clarence E. Haiflby Troop A, 125 CAV SQ (MEC 2) A.P.O. 230 c/o Postmaster New York, New York Dear Dave, I am sitting under an apple tree in France. No! I am not alone. There is another soldier here with me and the topic is what will we write. Do you get the New York Times? If you do, you probly read the six colome right up my outfit received. It was our first battle and a hell of a thing to go through. How would you like to make your home in a cemetary for four days with the Germans giving you artilery fire. Each shell that comes over you think will be the one with your name on it, but it isn't. My buddies and I went through that too and we are going on untill victory. The other day I got to talk to S. Sargent Tommy Randle for about 20 minutes. He was looking fine but he did need a shave. We both did as far as that goes. You can change the town, but keep the park and people untill we get back. Always, Clarence
