To: Mr. Dave Elder c/o Evening Journal Office Washington, Iowa From: PFC Robert Nicola [illegible] April 20, [1945?] Germany Dear Dave: This finds me taking a much needed rest for a few days and so I'm trying to catch up on letter writing, along with sleep and a few [other?] put off necessities of life. Am really feeling good, especially after being able to clean up some. And am really proud and happy over a few things also. One thing I've won the Combat Expert Infantryman's Badge, didn't realize I'd ever get one so soon if I ever got one at all. Then I got my ETO ribbon and I guess we are entitled to wear a couple battle stars on them. Don't blame me if this sounds like I'm bragging; but I can't help it I'm so tickled. Also I'll get $10 a month more now because of the Combat Badge. Weather is so wonderful today that we are going without our shirts. Good baseball weather, wish I were in a good game right now. We've been drawing our own rations to cook ourselves here lately and along with the fun of cooking we are getting some good, hot meals. A change from K and C rations anyway. Well, Dave I'm afraid I'm going to leave to stop and do a little sock washing, Sincerely, Bob
