several times we hear artillery all the time and every day see soldiers coming from and going to the front. We see lots of "macaronis" too. They are very neat and clean looking soldiers but the americans are the best equiped I have seen yet. We see Alpine soldiers with soft lots and feathers stuck in them. The Italians or "macaronis" have caps with a big red star in front and micleled stars on their collars. I hear they are not much good as fighters. Today I am orderly for 1st sergeant running errands from Co. Hdqs to Bt and regt. Hdqrs. and havent had much to do so for. Oh yes I got the $5 just a couple of days before we left the village by the lake and we got paid for 3 mo's just a little later so I have lots of money now but so far havent been able to get to a photographer It has been raining for the last 3 or four days but it hasn't been very cold. As soon as you read this letter send it to Grandma and Aunt Arua as Im not sure I can write to them today and nobody knows when Ill have another chance. Well I guess this is all I know for now so will close lots of love to mama and the kids. Pvt. H. W. Wertz. M.G. Co. 168 Inf. A.E.F. France
