December 8-45 Excursion Inlet, Alaska Dear Dave: Maybe you are surprised to know that I am in Alaska but I have been here for four months. I didn't have my address changed because Ft Lewis is on the way up here so the scuttlebutt lost very little time getting up here. This Excursion Inlet was an $80,000,000 Army and Navy base built during the Aleutian Campaign and 700 German P.W.s and 100 American personnel along with 65 civilian engineers came here the 1st of Jul to tear the place down and salvage all usable material. The place is about finished and we expect to leave here the 20th of this month so you better take my name from the mailing list. This doesn't mean that I am getting discharged (dammitt) too much time in the States but I expect to get home on furlough early in January and then maybe I can find something to get "sprung" on. It was really swell of you and all concerned to take care of us boys like you have and just saying thanks doesn't seem like much but you can bet that we think it was swell. So long for now and thanks again. Sincerely S/Sgt. Dale S Fuhr
