May 6, 1944 Italy Dear Dad & Mom: Another good day, things are going fine and we are busy. Kind of getting back in the collar after my vacation, seems pretty good at that to be doing something. Wonder if any of the early birds are planting corn yet, expect so if the season is at all favorable. Some of the boys down on the river should be started so they can get their names in the paper for being first. Found time to read a book it was "Cross Creek," I think you've read it. Rather enjoyed it, the Red Cross has quite a few good books and I'm going to try and read a little more regularly than I have the past couple of years. Had a real treat last night, had ice cream, don't know where it came from but it was good. Expect it was Italian made had chopped almonds in it and some other flavor I couldn't recognize. We have several dogs with us that were flown over with the planes, every army camp has its share of dogs, most of them boast regular G.I. dog tags and have such names as Furlough, Salvo, A. W.O. L. etc. Many of them seem to thoroughly enjoy flying as much as
