June 1, 1944 Italy Dear Dad & Mom: Another fine warm day, wasn't very busy so could enjoy it. Got two airmail letters from you yesterday written the eighteeth and nineteenth, that's the quickest Ive received any so far. Was awfully sorry to hear of Mr. Herricks death he was one of the old friends of the family for sure. I remember as a kid I used to wonder how he drove his car with only one arm, don't think he did do such a good job of it either. Sorry you have a cold seems as this all the hot weather would bake it out of you. Its funny to go all winter without one and then catch one when its almost summer. That Greasy Ganslar is a lucky cuss seems as tho he's always at home on a furlough. Say it would be funny if Jim Bormen would get Brad for an instructor wouldn't it? Russell does have a responsibility, one that I shouldn't care for Im sure, think (illegible) he do his job well tho. Wonder if Dickeys new pup has taken the place of Woofie, don't think it's nearly as good a kids dog as Woof it certainly couldn't stand the rough life Dick has led him. Had a nice letter from Irma today and a short note from Charley Haippel, will try and see him soon as he is on the same field as some of my other friends. Are going to have a movie again tonight so if nothing unforeseen comes up Ill see another show, don't know what it will be but shall find out. guess Ill sign off for tonight Love Johnny
