way for several week and so it didn't affect me at all. The drilling, of course, is a little tiresome but quite a bit of fun. Yesterday morning we spent entirely in marching and foot-work. In the afternoon they issued us rifles and we have had the manual of arms for two drills now and we can do it pretty good. The first time we practised this morning, a whole lot of the fellows had to fall out because they couldn't remember from yesterday, but I stayed in. We have a fine bunch of officers. Captain Sherburne, form here, Lieutenant Brown of Davenport, 1st Sargeant Guthrie and all the non-commissioned officers are fine fellows. When off duty, I run around with Gail (Corker) Fry from Kalona. We are the only two privates that know of
