Saving...
August 23 [1944] Dear Mother, Number eighteen letter of yours arrived so I have that to answer. I'll ramble on a bit & then do it. This morning I got a permanent that I think I'll like very much. I was tired of the droopy looks & with so much damp weather it was hard to keep them looking decent. This afternoon Jay went bicycling, which I didn't just feel like, so Johnnie & I went down town & shopped a little. I found a darling Victorian locket with pearls around it for Betty W. for christmas & a jade ring I intended for Mary when I got it, but now think I may keep. They were both quite high, about ten times what I'd pay for a gift for them if I were at home, but then, I'm not at home. I am planning to collect some more things and send the whole box to you with items labeled. Quite a few of the things I think we will want to keep.
