"The Razor's Edge" by Somerset Maugham. (Finished it - quite a book - his best, I think) Got a letter from Kenneth today. He asked about you. Said they had a letter from you written just before you left Washington. Maybe he hasn't answered it yet for the one I just got was to thank me for the wedding present! I think they are most awfully busy at the Ranch. He says Louie is still in the Alutians and thinks he may be given a furlough in August. He used a cute envelope that I'll stick in your box. Roberta's vine has lots of bud clusters on it. I am watching for them to open. The old apple tree ought to be very pretty this summer. When I was in the kitchen fixing my black raspberry shortcake for lunch Mr. Davis called me to tell me about his accident. He got his hand caught in a conveyor belt and had to have the first joint of the first finger on his left hand cut off. He is most cheerful about it. Said he missed only four hours work. I have a row of stones from the driveway here in my bedroom window and expect to deliver them to that cat when it howls around the back yard about midnight. Most of the baby birds are grown up now so probably it can't get them but I hate to have it get the habit of coming around here. I have trouble enough with rabbits and moles. Makes me think of the stones you used to carry in your apron pockets to throw at Leo Farrell. Wonder where he is now? or did he die? I still wonder. I wrote in about your accident insurance policy that I have been taking care of for several years along with mine and as I thought, it doesn't cover you when out of this country or Canada, but they will put it on a sort of a reserve list so we can take it out again when you come back without losing any of the accumulated benefits. It is now four o'clock and I am going in the library and read a while. Love to my best girl, Mother The Fourth - about noon - I have been working in the yard all morning - went over in Koses and pulled our vines out of their trees - Had to leave some of the grape in their pussy willow for it was loaded with grapes - will try to remember to cut it off this fall - trimed around the pool and the rest of the pool yard - it was a mess and I carried away several clothes baskets of stuff. I have now had my bath and am all sweet & nice for the Ration Board - I have on the rose dress you made me (the wash one) and the little shell clip you sent me from Mass. Will go out now and have my lunch then am off - love B.P.F.
