Monday night at 7 Dec 11 - 44 Dear Helen Nice day today for I got the Scotch plaids letter & numbers 64 and 65 with blanks & tax slip. If I can bum a ride with Mr. Kosen tomorrow noon I'll go over and tend to this bond business. So glad the papers got back before the 15th for now you shouldn't lose any enterest - My! that's a big tax you have! that is what comes of having a big income - I rather think when your extra hundred comes I'll get you a G. bond (interest of 1.25 comes twice a year and over pays the full hundred for them) Then the next four salary checks that come I'll put in the checking acct to pay your tax - I am also going to (illegible) the 30.00 I have in the budget box towards that cemetery 50.00 and put that in the checking acct. then I'll begin laying up some extra then for my own taxes. My funning expenses ought to be light till garden supplies start having to be bought for spring - guess the 150 ft roll of wire to cover the strawberry rows will be the only big item this year - 4 dollars & something for that. Your Scotch letter had been opened by censor - nothing cut queer it took so long to come - written Nov 16 and got here with the Nov 28th one. I like the "Clan Macduff" colors. Your holly berries are not very red. Do your boys make stencil cards too? Why did they take your canteens away from you? Will you get it back to bring home? I'm going to stick some animal patterns in the next box I send you - I paid a dollar for a subscription to the "Work Basket" or some such thing and I get a bunch of patterns every month. I'll enclose a card that came today from Prof. Bush. You also got one from Alice M. Whitney - Box 525 - Woodmere, N.Y. It is too large for this envelope so I'll put it in your next box - I didn't open it. If I stop suddenly, you'll know it is time to listen to the basket ball game that begins at 7:55. Iowa beat Western Teachers 101 to 23 Sat night - Eric says its the best material he ever saw at Iowa - Says each position is 3 and 4 deep in extra
