Thursday Night Dec 21 - 1944 Dear Helen - Another of those "in bed" letters. I'll hurry up and get on my penmanship. Any way it is warm & easy on my tired back to do them this way. Got your 67 today, written Dec 7th and only two days later than the V mail you posted the same day - Glad to hear of all the good times those people are giving you. I had no idea they'd be so friendly, had you? What do you do about food points for them? or aren't they rationed? Your hot water bottle experience makes me think I'd better buy myself a "spare" for I could never get my feet warm should mine go bad at night - It is on my knee right now as my feet are thawed out and cozy. What a nice box from the Stribleys - How did Grace get so much in one 5 lb package? I am surprised that G. Treneman ever got herself collected enough to get a Christmas box off in Sept. Wasn't it nice of them - Guess I told you of the box they sent me. I sent them candies but haven't written them yet. What has become of Helen C - ? You used to write of her so often and now you haven't mentioned her for many weeks. Is she still there? and friendly? War news so bad today - It makes me sick to think what the poor people in those boarder towns are going through. Aren't you riding your bicycle at all now? What lovely winter weather! We are snowed under and temperature is zero and lower and windy. - Rotten - I broke down and spent 1.10 on taxis today - Got one at 1:30 to take me and their heavy basket to Pardens - wait till I unloaded, then take me on over town (It was a girl driver) - did a few errands - one of them putting your Dec 15th 50.00 in the checking acct towards your income tax - When I was ready to come home it was only 2:30 and no bus till 4:10. I bought a magazine and thought I'd go to the City Hall rest room and read till bus time - as I passed the Jefferson Hotel taxi stand thought I'd just ask about a cab to the West Side - and behold! there was one just starting out here, so I got in with the other folks and was home in no time - I lay down for a half hour, then wrote more cards & letters - When I get them all answered, I'll send them on to you and you can read & destroy them. Tell me more about the boys and the ordinary things you do and say and think in the shop.
