Thursday - April 12 - 1945 Dear Helen - Well news of the President's death has just come in and I feel it is the worst blow this country and the whole world could have - Such a shame he couldn't have been left to finish the job - He is the only President we ever had that I thought really cared about ordinary people. Seems as tho I have lost one of my best friends. Betty came up to visit a few minutes this afternoon when I got home at 3:30 from getting my permanent. She had only just gone home when the phone rang and there she was to tell me Eric had just called her to tell her the news - it hadn't yet been confirmed and everyone was hoping there was some mistake - I turned on the radio right away and there it was. When did you hear it over there? it must have come in in the night as it was almost 5 here. Letter 4 of April 5th came today. Splendid time - glad the rain cape got there and hope it isn't the kind that gets too stiff. I tried to get more pears today (Brody's) they were out but think they'll have more soon. You aren't getting fat are you with all those snacks? Yes Nellie would find it "tame" and so will all the rest of you - I shudder to think what I'll do with you evenings!! I want to go to bed around 7 - can you picture yourself being content with that schedule night after night?? I still think you'd better grab yourself someone near your own age who can keep awake after sundown. Glad your work is easier - why is it? Did you have a nice week-end in London? Does Bobby's wife come to Whitehall for his birthday celebration - So is London where he lives? I worked in the garden yesterday 7 to 10 then finished cleaning the living room - about midafternoon we had a lulu of a storm. I'll put the Iowan in your next box - damage at airport - park and Fine Arts Bldg - nothing but twigs - garbage can & soft water pail blown around here I'm thankful to say - I was vacuum cleaning walls so didn't hear it coming till it hit - then it was all over & too late to be scart - I have so many nice tings piled up in our closet to send that I wish you'd request something from Betty every once in a while to drain off the surplus. Love to You Mother
