Monday Night July 9. 1945 Dear Helen - 8:15 and I've had to draw the curtains into my workroom to keep the sun out of my eyes - Would you believe it on this date, I've had to go to bed to keep warm? - Seems like old times - temperature around 60 a strong wind blowing from the north and the forecast "colder" - I like it for I can get so much more work done. Your July 1st check came Sat. so this morning I went over and got you a 25.00 bond, then took your letter to Dombeys - they were much interested in filling your order - two of them climbed up and down ladders and dug under counters and finally came up with things you may be able to use - The pair of black "work shoes" looked to me about the kind you got before you left here - The only pumps they had in your size with closed toes were brown but he is dying them black for you - These two are the only ones that take ration stamps - they will send your letter to the head office in Des Moines after they have used it as a "request" here to mail you the package - The bedroom slippers I'm sure are not what you want for this time of year but will be nice when its cool - I shall look other places as soon as I have money and get you a dress pair something like the blue satin ones you had. They will take no points - I mean stamps - so I can get them anywhere I see them. I was so glad the store could mail them for that left me room
