I think I've missed my calling - Should be a lumber jack. I got up at 5:30 yesterday morning and cut down the last & biggest of those trees - It was about 35 ft tall and 8 inches through - I was proud of the way I "laid it out" - it fell right along the back garden fence not 6 in from it and yet never touched it - I got it cut up enough to carry to our back yard by the time it began to rain about 8 a.m. - Worked here & there between showers all day - Heard Cubs lose to Pittsburgh but they won today. June sent egg whites up so I made the cake and took her 3/4 of it that evening. We had a hard rain & wind around 6 this morning. Gretchen came in around 10 to bring me a lot of fruit jars that have rough tops so she can't use them with her lids - I can with Mason tops. One of North Liberty friends was killed by lightening in one storm yesterday morning. - Too wet this A.M. to work outdoors so I vacumm cleaned the house. - Had my first sweet corn for lunch. - the wind blew most of it over, but I don't think it will hurt it much - Worked in berry patch along late this afternoon. Used the excelsior from your box in the path. It has rained genetly off & on all day and is at it regular now - The carrots I planted just a few days ago are up - nice stand of them if the rabbits will just leave 'em alone - Had a couple dozen ripe tomatos yesterday - those little grape ones - they are good - am getting all the cux I can use now. - How beautiful scabeosis this year - will have to go over town tomorrow to do my shopping for my Sat. luncheon - am wondering what kind of meat I'll be able to find. The papers say 24,000 more men docked today from overseas - maybe you'll get to come this way yet - Loads of love to you Mother Freddie is a fine looking man isn't he? I take it that that is his picture - Did you ever see him?
