To day it is 85 years since our patriotic forefathers declared themselves independent of the usurpations of the Brittish Crown. At that time there were but 13 States or Colonies as the were called, and the were confined to the shore of the atlantic. Those western and north western States which now form so important a part in this union were at that time inhabited only by the red man of the forest. The Buffalo, the Elk, and the wild horse ranged at that time unmolested over these wide extended prairies, Our population was only about 3,000000 R.R. Steamboats, and the telegraph wires were among the things unknown at that day. Our arms and munitions of war were indeed very imperfect, Our manufacturing interests consisted chiefly of a few woolen manufactories that had to depend upon Great Brittian for a or license to run them, Our commercial interests were very limited. Consisting of a few vessels only which had in a certain measure to be dependent upon the english government, who always tried to monopolize the trade, and make us wholly dependent upon herself
