2 and at the same time exacted heavy duties from us, thus she had heaped one insult upon us after the other in quick succession till at length the burden became intolerable and raised the ire and indignation of our patriotic ancestors, and laid the foundation of the event which we this day have assembled to commemorate. It was the 4th day of July A.D. 1776 that our farsighted representatives in Congress shook off the gallic yoke of great Brittian and declared themselves a free and independant nation. and to carry out this great enterprize effectually. they pledged to each other their lives, their fortunes and their Sacred honor. But fellow citizens, let us here for a moment pause, let us try to calculate some of the cost attended the declaration, The war had been going on something like a year previous to this event, and as before observed our vessels and munitions of war was very inadiquate to the task and had to contend against mighty fleets that was continually landing large and well deciplined armies all along our Sea Coasts that attacted us in every direction from Massachusetts down to Georgia. and penetrated into the country as fast as the they possibly could laying waste the Country, and in several instances they amused themselves in murdering indiscriminately defenceless men women and children
