July 9, 1945 Trinidad Dear Dad & Mom: Was just out looking at the ants working, there is a clump of trees not far from our barracks and I noticed a bunch of little paths about four inches heading from them. Couldnt figure out what they were at first until I saw the ants, big red ones travelling along them in regular droves. Never saw so many in a bunch and they have a hill as big as a woodchuck mound where they live. Sure hope they dont invade our barracks. Saw another funny thing, have a little low growing plant which they call sensitive plant. Just touch it and it curls up tight there can be a big patch of it and when you walk thru it and look back it has almost disapeared. A cigarette touched to the tip of the leaves causes it to fold up very slowly one leaf at a time, the leaves are like a fern but darker colored, must be of the same family as those fly catcher plants. Had turkey for dinner, mighty good got a fine big slab of breast, also had giblet gravy and sweet potatoes, frozen whole kernal corn and raisen pie which was passable.
