July 13, 1945 Trinidad Dear Dad & Mom: Just noticed it was Friday the thirteenth but as I'm not very superstitious I wont worry about it. Got a letter from you today mailed the tenth. The air mail ones come in three days and the others take four or five. Wish we had a good place in this barracks to write letters. I've tried lying in my bed sitting on the edge of it and holding a board on my lap etc but it doesnt seem to work very well, if I can find some lumber I will build a little table. One of the fellows just came from the dentist and having a wisdom tooth pulled. I get a little disgusted with the army dentists all they will do is emergency work. Unless a tooth is aching they wont touch it and thats contrary to what they always said in civilian life. Reckon they have more than they can handle tho. I kind of wondered about Charles Kaippel getting home and out of the army. Couldnt see why he'd be getting out any more than a lot of other guys. He could do lots more than stay in Italy for awhile. I didnt know anything about there being an eclipse of the sun but it rains so much down here and the sun is hidden that I probably couldnt have seen it had I tried.
