July 20, 1945 Trinidad Dear Dad & Mom: Ive just been talking to a native boy, finding out what I could about the island. He says the jungle we can see from camp has paths hacked out thru it and there are villages and plantations where it looks like solid underbrush. They raise coffee, limes, make chocolate, and raise nearly every vegetable that grows. He was telling he about [illegible] beans, they are used in flavoring chocolate and making perfumes. We've noticed beside some of the houses between here and town large triangular flags stuck up on poles. They are Hindus and the flags indicate feast days, all have different symbols embroidered on them for the different occasions. The British have free schools here and all the children are compelled to go. Have Jack Benny's program on the radio now, long way after Sunday but its kind of funny. Rochester is the high spot of the whole thing tho. No I think there is only one [hose?] here, so perhaps I'll run into young Jehlning from Waucoma. Saw a fellow the other day from New Hampton. Does Dale Johnson fly down thru
