July 30, 1945 Trinidad Dear Dad & Mom: Setting around waiting for the Colonel to come around and inspect the barracks begins to look as tho he isnt coming but the joint got a good cleaning up anyway. Got a letter from Bill last night, he had a good furlough said he worked quite a lot on the farm but enjoyed it. He didnt get married after all thought theyed wait until the whole thing is over. The fellows are all together in Carolina but not too happy about the set up. We heard they were to come down here but dont know whether there is anything to it or not. Tomorrow is pay day or supposed to be, sure hope it is. I'll get a pretty good pay two months at one time. Will be about as much as I've ever [illegible] at one time. The air is very heavy and close today makes it hard to breathe, this wouldnt be any place for an asthma victim. One or two of the fellows have hay fever slighty & sniff & snort around in great style. There is a monkey in a cage in the barracks next door and one of our fellows just went over to feed him something and it got out
