The State University of Iowa Iowa City May 17, 1917 Dear Mother and Father: At the end of three days of hard work I am still very much alive. Every day I get a little harder and more fit; I haven't much fear now of not being able to stand the training. Fact is that although our day is long, it is so well divided between physical and mental work that neither proves very tiresome. Today, for instance, we had 15 minutes of calisthenics, breakfast, an hour of squad drill, half an hour of signalling, an hour's practice march, an hour lecture on drill regulations, rearrangement of accommodations in the barracks, dinner, an hour of drill in the fivings, and hour lecture on customs of the service, company drill, rest, retreat,
