Amos inquired. "You bet I am", the soldier replied, and proceeded to march Amos to the guard house. There our colored friend was brought before the officer of the day. "What are you doing here?" the O.D. asked, recognizing Amos and deciding to have a little fun. "Well, suh, I'se jes' comin' back to the officers' club whah ah wuhks." "That so? Where have you been?" "Well, suh, ah've been payin' a little visit to a friend in St. Paul." "Aren't you married?" "No, suh, ah's jes' tryin' to get married." "That's it, eh? What time do you have to get up?" "Bout 5 o'clock, suh." "All right, you had better move along and get some sleep, and next time you'd better leave your friend in time to get in before 11 o'clock." "Yassuh, yassuh, jes' as you say, suh." And Amos bowed out saluting the O.D. and the sentry until he had disappeared in the darkness. We all heard about it, so next day at lunch we discussed the latest orders to the sentries which are that they shall challenge once and if the person challenged doesn't
