December 16th, 1917. B.V.D. Nevada, Mo. Sweetheart - I didn't write to you yesterday; did you notice it? You've undoubtedly engaged a transfer van to tote your letters from the Post office now. The reason I didn't write is because I tho't surely I'd hear from you and then I'd answer at night. But you din' write, didja? And you said you would, dinya? Today we have our White Gift Service but I am going to be a slacker and lock myself in my room. I'd give 'most everything on earth for fifteen minutes of quiet - fifteen minutes
