the open plaine [sic. plain] in front of us in to the woods again where night put a end to one of the most teribel [sic. terrible] conflicts of the war. We lay on our guard all night. Where our first lines were in the morning the shelling .... betwix us and the rebels. It was awful to day and here [sic. hear] the cry of the wounded [and then] just emagine [sic. imagine] a plain ... about 2 miles long strewn with dead wounded and dying and gun carrages [sic. carriages] destroyed it is enough to make the harst of men sick of war. The morning of the 3rd opened with picket fireing [sic. firing] and some canonading and 2 in the afternoon the rebeles [sic. rebels] opened with more than 70 peaces [sic. pieces] of canon on our left flank in front of our Corps and Sickels [sic. Sickles] and such a a teribel [sic. terrible] shower of shot and shell we never
