but I could look at your picture and, knowing that you love me, feel happy about that. I suppose one might as well concentrate attention on the pleasant features to escape the sad spots. A long letter from your mother - mine too - awaited me at the War College. It helped a lot to start the day off right. As it was meant for both of us I'm enclosing it. I shall answer it directly this evening or tomorrow. I worked pretty consistently until 4:30. Then I came in to see about your birthday present. You wouldn't let me buy it Saturday, so it will have to arrive late. In fact, I think I'll have it marked before I send it. Of course the secret is out now - it's silver, - and of that terrible M. C. pattern. The pattern is beautiful - but we'll have to rename it. I suggest you make a tracing at once of the marking on pieces you have, so I can show the jewelers the style of marking desired. To make the tracing, if you don't know a better way, lay a piece of paper across a fork handle and rub the paper above the initialing with a soft lead pencil. I want the paper, you may keep the fork. I have a fruit spoon selected. It's about the size of a coal shovel and guaranteed to prevent peas from skidding.
