It was an odd sensation that one felt as he read the name on the platform lamps. Here we were passing through the oldest center of Anglo-Saxon culture, but on the same mission that had no doubt taken other men through Oxford centuries before -- war. And our business was too serious to permit our pausing for even a few hours to breathe the contemplative atmosphere. One of our number had been a student at Oxford. He could not give a moment to his old haunts. At midnight we arrived at ___. There we lined up and followed a guide for about a mile through fog darkened and dampened railroad
