Camp Near Fredericksburg Friday May 23d, 1862 Dear Parents once more I have seated myself (or rather laid myself) under a large shade tree for the purpose of writing to you although I have but little news to write Yesterday we came in from picket duty the rebels kept shooting all day at the right but did not hurt any one they were about half a mile distant and all the men on our side had to do was to step out into the road and keep watch and they would see a puff of smoke when they would run back behind the fence and prety soon whiz would come the ball and the report of the gun The boys thought it fine sport to be shot at with so little danger but I was not there to see the fun my post being half a mile from the road in the edge of a piece of woods with a large field and a house in front where there were some nice people lived. I traded them my days ration of coffee
