Hooker is all right yet and in command of the "Army of the Potomac" as of course you have that Burnside has been removed from command here. I saw him when he took the boat here for Washington and helped give him a parting cheer. I hated to see him leave as in my opinion he was the best man we had here for the place, O.W. Norton to the contrary notwithstanding. I was glad when I heard of Gen. Porter's dismissal from the service and think him as black a traitor as we had in the service and yet he is one of O. W. Norton's favorites while on the other hand I uphold General McDowell who is declared by Norton to be a traitor but I would go into battle under him as quick and as willingly as under any other man and I have been told confidentially by some of Porters own men that in the battle of Bull Run they lay in position with and saw Longstreet march right past them and reinforce Jackson and cut King's division to pieces when they might have cut Longstreet to
