5- After Windrip is inaugurated as Pres. in 1937 he at once siezes the reins of pfeeower. He demands of Congress that he have complete control of legislation and execution and that the Supreme Court be rendered incapable of blocking anything he might be amused to do. When both houses reject the demands a state of Martial law is proclaimed. The Congressmen are arrested and jailed & so begins the reign of terror. Throughout the first months of Windrip's rule Doremus trys to restrain himself in voicing his real feelings toward the state of affairs but as the "plot thickens" so to speak, he finally publishes a sharp criticism of the administration and is promptly arrested and jailed. P.234 When his son-in-law a fine man interferes in his behalf he is promptly lead out and shot. Then later Jessup is seized, beaten, dosed with huge quantities of castor oil and thrown into a prison camp. The good for nothing and vicious Shad Ledue, a hired man whom Jesup had tried to befriend rises to power as a Commissioner in the new dictatorship & a leader among all the floaters and malcontents - turns against his former employer.
