There is probably no section of the country where the story of prosperity past and present is more closely bound up with the forests than in the states of the Pacific N.W.
Your magnificent forests have meant what to a greater or lesser degree they mean everywhere as sources of lumber, fuel, conservers of the soil and the streams shelters of wild life and opportunities for wholesome recreation.
To use them as a mine to be exhausted and abandoned means sure disaster.
There are few sections where the subject of conservation should have a more general appeal. So much has been given, that it is hard to realize that there can be an end to even such resources as yours. And this has been to a great extent  and this [?] on history of our nation. As with each generation the tide of the population pushed further west always there seemed to me more. Yet Michigan once cloaked with forests, now studies what to do with 11000000 acres of cut over & burned over lands. And imports its timber.
Chicago was the great center because of the forests of the lake states.
