Preserves are so sweet that they aren't hard to keep and cooking in little batches is only to keep the shape of the berries Just an unnecessary detail for a family of children who need quantities of things. I can see Hazel wouldn't want to do it if Irene was at home giving directions; but if she can be her own boss all that is necessary is to boil the jars hard for a good 20 minutes and they are sterile. Hazel said she didn't refuse or agree. I didn't say anything. But last night when I was there Irene mentioned how hard they'd worked on berries and She is certainly in no shape to do it. She offered Hazel a share of the preserves for her work. We are all short of sugar and the way Earl likes to eat that was a good deal for McIlvains. Even with no thought of shares I couldn't refuse to do it. Even if she had asked me when I work, and live clear across town I'd still try. And to be home and living right next door it is more than I can imagine. Mother Davis said when I took cake to the girls when Irene was in the hospital in '42 that she helped Jordan's mother and now I could help Irene with her kids if she was sickly and I was able.
