817-19 St. S.E. Cedar Rapids, Iowa August 14, 1945 Dearest, It is fifteen minutes until midnight on the day the official announcement of the Japanese surrender has been made. It does not seem possible that almost six hours have elapsed. I don't know where they have vanished! They galloped by jet plane, maybe! I hurried to get stamps, ice, groceries and bakery goods and be home before six because a broadcast was anticipated any time after five. I was back and heard the entire report.
