HDQ C-D 26 U.S.N. Const. Batt. Camp Parks, Calif. Jan. 3, 1944 Dear Frances, Well, we're back in the States again. We docked at San Francisco Friday morning and reached camp in the afternoon. The camp is near Livermore. Have wondered if you ever decided were I was in the Pacific. We were nearly one year on Guadalcanal, after a short stop at New Caledonia. Our orders for return came early in December, and we left on the eleventh. The ship, a Dutch transport, was not crowded, and we had a fairly quick and uneventval crossing. Am now getting used to cool weather, which isn't freezing, but is damp and seems cold. The camp is new; living conditions, including chow, are very good. That's much more than can be said of us for the past year. However, I came through it without illness and am feeling fine. We are to have a thirty day leave beginning sometime this week. This is pay day and they say we'll be on our leave by Thursday. We don't all leave camp at once as transportation is being arranged for us, so we are sure of having it. They say
