2 didn't have the delight that I had in my first year. However, there were many nice things about it, and it is a thrill, you know, to work with responsive youngsters. But I thought I'd like to get into college teaching. I'd gone to summer school here at the university, and so a year ago I applied for a graduate assistantship. I didn't know I was going to have it until June, 1943, when I started my second summer of study. I was in ecstasy. I went one term in the summer, & then went home to return in September, and I've been blissful! The graduate assistantship really amounts to a small scholarship, for my work is very light; I read English paper for all very fine instructors here. I'm supposed to take my M.A. this May. Right now I'm in the throes of my thesis. My adviser is grim (most of the time) and very abrupt and he scares me, but he's very good. He ploughs through my poor manuscript, with his red pencil, and I have much to do over. It's good for me, and I've adored this year of study. Fremont is just 50 miles away and I get home every so often. Now, Laurie, I want to confide in you. Please don't mention this to anyone except Jewel. Ida knows I think I'm going to be married in Mar or June
