July 2, 1935 Dear Daddy and Mary, Thank you both very much for your letters. Did not actually need the money, but it will come in handy this week since I shall have to buy something for Richard James, whose birthday is the 6th and for Jo, whose birthday is the 7th, and I think I should also get a little something for John, since I am not at the moment within the family circle. What, I haven't the slightest idea - Nor can I advise you as to what to get for Jo. I suppose some indestructable (Richard is very handy) little toy would do for Dicky. I stayed down at Ann's last Saturday night and was awakened at 2:00 A.M. by the prolonged screaming of fire sirens. We could see the smoke and flames from the back porch, and thought at first that it was the John B. Murphy Hospital. So well all dashed down and discovered that it was a huge garage on Broadway. The
